Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
August 3, 2016 – Team at Karanga Camp - 13,600ft above Sea Level
We love ginger tea, our cook staff here on Kilimanjaro boils fresh ginger root and makes a wonderful tea. This team has been enjoying it throughout the day.
Yes, we moved to drinking hot drinks, no more cold water. We are now at the Karanga camp, 13,600ft. above sea level.
I called you earlier to report the beautiful starlet sky, the breach wall the Barranco camp on August 3rd. Now it is the afternoon of August 3rd, the team started out this morning by climbing the Great Barranco Wall, that spectacular ledge trail. We reached the top of the Barranco wall in about one hour and half. We continued to the east across the Karanga River. Now we are just above the Karanga River, at Karanga camp. Quite a bustling place, there are a lot of other teams here getting ready to move up for their summit attempt as we are. Clouds have moved in; it is quite a beautiful setting.
The team is doing great. We’ve been using our pulse oximeter to see how our oxygen saturation and our pulse is throughout this trip. This team is still registering in the nineties, high eighties, which is extremely good.
I think their Diamox, which everybody is using is helping and I think they are strong crew and fortunate crew so far with their health. It takes humility to climb a big mountain like this.
This team is determined; they’ve been through a lot of adventures together in their lives and on their own around the world. But I think they know they are on a big mountain, they have that look in their eye. I think they are not going to stop when we start toward the summit; effectively will be tomorrow night when we get up.
