Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
August 23, 2009 – Chris Heads to the Waterfalls and Visits the Locals
Hello, it’s Chris calling from the foothills of Mt. Meru. Everything is well and I’m here with my guide Julius. We just hiked for 4 hours to the waterfall. We stopped by the local villages which were very nice. We are on our way back now and everything is good and I’m feeling great!
Bye for now.
About Mount Meru: Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano located 70 kilometers (44 miles) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. At a height of 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), it is still visible from Mt Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. Much of its bulk was lost about 8,000 years ago due to an eastward volcanic blast, similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington. Mount Meru most recently had a minor eruption about a century ago. The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity.
