August 6, 2009 – The Team is Sleeping High at Lava Tower Camp
Hello, it is Amanda calling you from 4,640m (15,223ft) at Lava Tower camp, our highest point yet where we will be sleeping tonight. A little update: Rob is on Diamox, Amanda loves the ravens and Jan is hoping the fourth night in the sleeping bag is the key to figuring out the zippers and Velcro.
Last night we slept at the edge of a plateau after a gradual climb over a long day. We stopped at the Simba Cave for a snack. We slept at Moir camp 4,114 m (13,500 ft).
The day before we reached the Shira plateau which is in the crater of an extinct volcano and had our first view of the summit.
We broke out our arctic gear to cope with the heavy frost and enjoyed an other worldly view of the full moon rising up behind the mountain peak. The moonlight illuminated the glaciers along with the sunset casting a pink glow.
