January 30, 2015 – Our First Carry up to Plaza Canada
Well it's Friday afternoon, January 30th. I am calling you from Plaza Canada, our Camp 1.
The team has made its first carry up the mountain. The Bolivians of course have been climbing ahead of us. But this is the first load of our personal gear. It went very well. We've got great weather. Our elevation, by the way, is 6,500 metres that’s about 16,600 feet. Oh it's up there!
Now the team climbed pretty well. It didn’t take them much more than about three and a half hours to climb up here. We moved at a steady pace.
On our way here I could tell people were looking a little lethargic. This is an altitude we are not yet used to. So our carry up here will help. Having our equipment stashed here will help. We need to go back down and sleep our third night at Plaza de Mulas. Of course it is still quite high at 14,400 feet. But that's what it's all about, climb high sleep low, do that in stages until you are strong enough to go up to the higher camps.
Things are going great we will report to you in the coming days as we continue to acclimatize and prepare the mountain for our ascent.
