Why climb with Berg Adventures

Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch

August 10, 2014 – Team at High Camp

It is 3 in the afternoon on Sunday, the 10th, and I am calling from what we call our High Camp, we made it to 16,000ft. Our gears are all up here, our camp is set up, we just arrived to a rousting singing and dancing, the most energetic yet, the entire team joined in where all the guides and staff welcomed to 16,000 ft. This team looks great, believe me.

We are looking across at the jagged multi-summit peaks of Mwenzi and we will be going tomorrow towards Stella Point, nearly 19,000ft. on the crater rim. We are really looking forward this year to the signs, I heard that just 2 or 3 weeks ago they changed signs at Stella Point and at Uhuru, the very top of Kilimanjaro.

Few years ago, about 2 years ago, they put up this really ugly plastic green signs and I was pleased to hear that the Kilimanjaro National Park has replaced yet again with some wooden signs similar to the old ones that were there for many, many years. Hopefully we will be standing by those signs tomorrow as we reached the top of Kilimanjaro, first Stella Point, then across to perhaps Uhuru, the very highest point.

We keep reporting, posted as we climb higher, towards our goal and we will give you a report about what the moon does as it rises tonight, I am not sure what the clouds will be doing but we are in a beautiful spot regardless at High Camp.

Here is an image of Mawenzi from our High Camp. Mawenzi is the third highest peak in Africa after Kibo and Mount Kenya. Kilimanjaro is composed of three volcanic cones – Kibo, Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kibo’s crater rim at 5,895 m;( 19,341 ft.); Mawenzi at 5,149 m; (16,893 ft).; and Shira at 3,962 m; (13,000 ft.) Of Kilimanjaro’s three peaks, Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant; steam and sulfur are still emitted.

This green and yellow metal plastic looking Kilimanjaro sign replaced the old one in January 2012. Gone was the rustic weathered sign…Now, after 2 years of complaints sent to Kilimanjaro National Park, the park decided to return to the old look.
