Why climb with Berg Adventures

Vicious and Delicious Kilimanjaro Climb and Wildlife Safari Dispatch

October 1, 2013 – Vicious and Delicious Reach 16,000 feet On Our Third Day On the Mountain

“Climb high, sleep low” is an important concept in acclimatization to high altitude. Yesterday we arrived at the Barranco Camp, which lies along the Southern Kilimanjaro Circuit Trail at 13,000 feet. Everyone looked good after their first night here, so we decide to spend the day climbing to a much higher elevation, the old Arrow Glacier camp site at 16,000 feet.

It was a cloudy day and we saw quite a lot of rain. It was beautiful however and we knew we must not have altitude sickness because our appetites were keen when we saw the lunch the staff had prepared for us at 16,000 feet above sea level.

The showers felt good even though we returned to Barranco Camp in the rain. This evening we will enjoy another our Chef’s Yona’s excellent meals and settle down for our second night sleeping at this elevation. We hope tomorrow brings some clearer skies, but life is good here on Kili, we will keep you posted.

We started our day by gathering all 120 Berg Adventures staff members for an introduction and acknowledgement.

Chage and Arnold, our “Choirmasters” always keep things going when we have meetings. Besides being a Choirmaster, Arnold walks with us each day carrying our medical box.

It was raining when we returned to Barranco, but that did not stop us from enjoying showers. Nancy and Greg though that it would be more fun to shower together!
