Why climb with Berg Adventures

Doc Martin 75th Birthday Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch

June 20, 2012 – Photos From Our Summit Day

It is a cold morning in the Crater of Kilimanjaro, at 18,800 feet above sea level. Our chefs, Yona and Sestenes, served a great meal here in the Crater after we came down from the summit yesterday. These guys are amazing. Yesterday, our day started as they prepared fresh mango and orange, porridge, western omelets, bacon, toast and peanut butter for our breakfast at our 16,000 foot camp. They then somehow made it to Stella point ahead of us in time to prepare a full hot lunch at 18,900 feet. As you will see in the photos, the cans of Red Bull served on a platter on the Crater Rim of Kilimanjaro were a welcome boost for us as well.

We will begin descending the mountain today. While we are on the way down we would like to get these photo up so that everyone can see what a great success our summit day on Kilimanjaro was.

The only reason that we can live so well up here is the loads that the remarkable BAI porters carry – these me are amazing.

Amazingly, several of our team still had energy for a walk out to the glacier from our Crater Camp. Elizabeth and Holly are heading for the ice.

Dennis Comfort had asked Doc to walk out to the glacier for him this year, so there was no way Doc was going to miss this.
