Why climb with Berg Adventures

Philmont Staff Association and Friends Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Dispatch

June 22, 2011 – A Joyful Hike and Return to Arusha

We spent our last day on Kilimanjaro in a joyful hike from Mweka Camp to the park gate. The trail descended into the rainforest and we enjoyed being in the shade of 500 year old trees. We reached the end of the trail at midday for a tremendous welcome from the porters and staff of Berg Adventures. There was plenty of singing, of course, and a big lunch under the open sky. Wally introduced each of the porters and staff so that we could thank them with handshakes and warm hugs.

We loaded into four Land Cruisers for the drive to Arusha, passing coffee plantations, carefully cultivated fields, and villages. When we reached the Mt. Meru Hotel hot showers were the first order of business for everyone. We gathered to talk about the upcoming game-viewing safari and met the driver/naturalists who will be showing us the best of Africa’s wildlife, starting tomorrow.

The rest of the evening has unfolded with lots of visiting, good dinners in the hotel restaurant, and early bedtimes for just about everyone. Tomorrow begins a new chapter in the African adventure, and we’re eager to get started.
