Silk Road Trekking Dispatch
August 1, 2009 – Fascinating People on the Streets of Samarkand
Samarkand is about space and beautiful architecture.
The lines of the ancient buildings are stunning against the blue desert sky.
The smiles and warmth of Uzbek people can outshine the imposing buildings however.
We visited Samarkand’s supermarket, which has been a trading site for thousands of years.
Women in the market display their daily loaves of fresh bread with pride.
We visited a shop run by a musician who sells and plays beautifully crafted Uzbek musical instruments. Made from Mulberry Trees and membranes of bull’s hearts, these strings transport one to the timeless spirit of the Silk Road
Ken is now a citizen of the Silk Road.
Jim is thinking about the mountains and
trying on his warm clothes.
We will return to timeless Samarkand after our trip to the Fann Mountains.
