Bhutan Trip Dispatch
March 16, 2009 – Himalayan Adventure is Underway
Ang Temba, Edouard, Jim, Janet, Bob and Kit flew from Kathamandu, Nepal to Paro, Bhutan via Druk Air, the national airline of Bhutan the morning of March 16. When Temba called into the BAI office he reported that the flight along the spine of the Himalayas was cloudy, which lent even more mystery to flying into this isolated kingdom. Lush green rice fields and ancient Dzongs (or fortresses) are surrounded by mountains in every direction.
When you land at the airport in Paro and clear customs you know immediately that you are in different world; the officials are all wearing traditional Bhutanese clothing. Men wear Gho, skirts with beautiful fabric designs.
Alex had arrived on a Druk Air flight from Bangkok the day before. The entire team met up at the Zwaling, a new luxury hotel which proudly uses Bhutanese architecture and art to showcase the style of this fascinating place whose people call their home "The Land of the Thunder Dragon".
