Aconcagua Expedition Dispatches

January 25, 2009 – Pizza and Cokes for the Team

The BAI 2009 Aconcagua expedition has been extremely successful. Good job team!

The BAI 2009 Aconcagua expedition has been extremely successful. Good job team!

It’s Sunday afternoon on the 25th of January. I’m calling your from the, relatively speaking, low altitude of 4,300m/14,107 ft at Plaza de Mulas.

The BAI Aconcagua team arrived at Berlin Camp safe and sound. It was definitely a challenging summit with the high winds and blowing snow. We were in our crampons for approximately 14 hours to the summit then back down to Berlin Camp.

The climbing team woke up after their second night at 19,200 ft at Berlin High Camp last night and of course after their successful trip to the summit of Aconcagua. Our 6 climbers who made it to the summit were not only strong physically but also mentally. They pushed themselves to the top. The ages of the summit team ranged from 22-68 years.

Anyone of these guys, Armando or David who turned around earlier and came all the way down to Plaza de Mulas, or the six guys who stood on the summit, will tell you that Aconcagua is a very extreme objective.

They woke up this morning satisfied, still exhausted, and there was still a long way down.

It didn’t take us a long time to pack up. There was still some wind but the weather was not too bad. We got back down here and found Bill, David and Armando sitting around the dining room table at Cynthia’s place having some pizza and coke, relaxing and telling stories. We joined right in with them! We were told the Alberta farm boys Cliff and David preformed a task which was second nature to them; they repaired a broken generator at the base camp and earned themselves a couple of cold beers as a reward.

This afternoon has been about cleaning up and having showers. We are now thinking of lower elevations, Mendoza tomorrow night. Stay tuned, we are not out of Argentina yet and we still have some more good times to share. We have the satisfaction of a very successful expedition behind us and are looking for the fun still ahead!
