Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
September 12, 2008 – Excited to Reach the Summit!
Hello from Kilimanjaro! We had an interesting day today with lots of alpine hiking. The skies were clear when we left but it clouded up later and we had some rain, snow and sleet for the rest of the day. We are now camped in a cloud at the Outward Bound School Hut 15,580ft (4750m). Tomorrow is the summit day.
They are continuing to take very good care of me. The rain was a little miserable, but I can’t complain because my gear is much better than my mates’!
Also, my chef extraordinary is continuing to keep me on the Michael Phelps diet. So I’m hoping I can hull my heavy butt up the mountain tomorrow morning!
I’m a little nervous and excited about tomorrow. We will rise at 11:00 p.m., leave at 12:00 a.m. and plan to be at the summit for sunrise. So far I have been doing well. My hiking partners have been getting me into good shape. I’m looking forward to talking to you after or at the summit. Love to all, Dave
