Why climb with Berg Adventures

Elbrus Expedition Dispatch

July 6, 2015 – We Prepare for Summit Day

It’s the afternoon of July 6th at Garabashi, the area where the Barrels are located – including our Barrel.

The forecast for tomorrow for the summit of Elbrus is 35km/h winds and clear skies.

The weather has been stable, typical of Elbrus throughout this season – that we have seen so far. That is a lot of clouds most days, some clear skies, mostly windy on the top but all in all we’ve seen good weather.

We think tomorrow is our day. We are going to go for the summit on Tuesday the 7th. Wednesday the forecast is for more precipitation and we feel good after our trip to Pastukhov yesterday. It’s time to go tonight when we will be getting up to climb.

Now the way we spent out today was, we had some supplies we needed; we ate all of our eggs. And also Heather who rent her boots, now that she spent three days in them she felt that they weren’t working very well. Her shins were getting banged up. So we had three more pairs of boots sent up from our rental shop in the valley. We went down to Mir station at 11,500 feet. That’s a notable spot on Mount Elbrus in terms of history, in my own experiences here.

We got to have an experience here that I’ve always loved over the years when it happens. Mikel who is an 80 year old gentleman from this valley runs a little museum there about WWII and resistance in this area to the Nazi occupation. This area is an area that has a great deal of local pride as well as patriotism for Russia, the former Soviet Union, the history with the Nazis and the resistance. History is really alive here on this 70th year anniversary from the end of WWII. It’s on everyone’s mind here.

So with Heathers new boots and some fresh eggs for Leila to prepare for us we came back up and we are settling down now for a very early dinner so we can get some good rest for our very early departure tomorrow.

Wish us luck. We are going to go for it. I think the weather will be on our side and I know the strength and spirit of the team is where it needs to be.

So summit of Mount Elbrus tomorrow!

While we were at Mir station 11,500 feet we took advantage of opportunity for Heather to try on some different boots for tomorrow’s Elbrus climb.
