Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
May 8, 2011 – Happy Mother’s Day from Everest Base Camp
We actually made the long, scenic walk from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp on Saturday, but all along the way I was hearing our team member’s comment about “Mother’s Day”. Our thoughts are will loved ones at home even as we find ourselves immersed in this wild Himalayan landscape with the colourful stories and drama of an Everest climbing season unfolding around us.
Today was nearly perfect weather. As we set out at 9:00 am, the way before us up the glacier to Everest Base Camp was clear and beautiful.
As we set out for Base Camp, Bob Hamilton was smiling and misty eyed.

Midway we ran across Bill McGahan from Atlanta. Bill’s daughter Sara is 16 and she is climbing Everest with Dave Hahn this season. Sara’s school, Westminister is near Mathes’ school Lovett.
We contacted Sara by radio at Camp I and the two girls who are “skipping school” and having a Himalayan adventure this season got to have a chat.
As we worked our way up the glacial trail to Base Camp the views of Everest just got better in the clear sky overhead.
Base Camp is huge, before you enter it seems to be a maze and you hardly know where to start.

Ang Temba’s neice, Pasang, made the trek to Base Camp with us today. Pasang goes to school in Kathmandu; this was her first visit to Everest Base Camp.
