Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch

April 26, 2011 – Kathmandu Tour Day

The entire team is together now and our minds are on the mountains and the adventures that lie ahead. But now in Kathmandu, one of the most mythic and colorful cities in the world, we wanted to see some of the key sites before we left. Early in the morning we were met by Arjun, our city tour guide. Paul and Fred know Arjun well because yesterday he took them to visit Patan, one of the three major cities of the Kathmandu Valley.

Our first stop today was Swayambunath, a religious site that is 2500 years old. Long ago Kathmandu tourists started referring to the area as the Monkey Temple because of the numerous monkeys who call it their home. At Swayambu, we saw many signs of the mixture of Hindusim and Buddhism in Kathmandu. Our next stop was Pashupati, a Hindu temple and religious site that attracts Hindu pilgrims from all over India and Nepal. We were lucky enough to visit the sadhu’s residence and met a number of colorful characters including an 83 year old holy man who several of us had our photos taken with.

For a relaxing lunch, we went to the Hyatt Hotel which is located near Boudhanath. After filling up on a delicious lunch, we visited Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal and the home to many Tibetan and Sherpa people.

Exhausted from a day of touring Kathmandu, we returned to the Yak and Yeti. Our energy was quickly revived when Charles Martin told us that he knew the best place to buy pashminas. Just a few minutes ago, Jackie walked back to the lobby with bags in each arm and said, “I have shopper’s shoulder.”

Tomorrow morning at 5:15 am, we will leave for the airport. We are scheduled to leave on the first flight for Lukla. Who knows what time that will actually leave, but we will be ready.
