Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition Dispatch

November 7, 2010 – On the Road to Hacienda Cusin

This is Leila Silveira reporting from San Pablo. Today we left Quito right on time at 9am. We were all inside the bus and happy to leave the big town and the pollution that goes with it.

We made a quick stop at a local market in Quito where we watched one of the few families in the country who still specialized in making dolls and toys with marzipan bread. It is quite fascinating, detailed work.

Then we continued our drive toward Hacienda Cusin, which will be our base camp for our next three nights. It's a beautiful hacienda and a perfect location for our next two adventures.

We made a quick stop at the Otavalo market, where we bought some souvenirs, went for a quick lunch, and then headed off to settle in at Hacienda Cusin.

Tomorrow is our first acclimatization hike and we are all excited and ready.

The Otavalo Market is one of the most colorful and interesting in all of South America.
