Why climb with Berg Adventures

Elbrus Expedition Dispatch

July 31, 2010 – From Moscow to the Mountains

We spoke today by telephone with Karina, Jack and Scott, as they were ending their drive from the Minernalnye Vody airport to our lodge in the forest in the Caucasus Mountains.

Time to start thinking about Mt. Elbrus

Time to start thinking about Mt. Elbrus

Jack told us that Moscow had been extremely interesting and that they guys enjoyed the contrast between Russia’s greatest cities, the history and culture that is always on the surface of St. Petersburg, and the stimulation and bustle of Moscow, financial, social and political capitol of Russia.

Jack also reported that sleep had been no problem for he and jack on the midnight train. He said they were sound asleep 30 minutes after pulling out and they slept the entire way to Moscow.

Jack and Scott were met by Berg Adventures Moscow guide, Larissa along with their driver from the Ararat Park Hyatt hotel. Even though it was still early in the morning, their rooms were ready when they arrived. The location of their hotel is superb, next door to the Bolshoi theatre and just across from Red Square.

Larissa took the guys for breakfast at a cafe nearby and the three of them did about a 5 hour walking tour of the city center. Larissa left the guys for some rest after they shared a lunch together at Cafe Puskin.

Larissa met the guys at the station and as Jack said, “This woman is full of information” , she began describing the sights of Moscow immediately on the ride the Ararat Park Hyatt Hotel. Jack also said that they enjoyed having discussions with Larissa about her life in Russia and her memories of the Soviet Union.

By the time we spoke to the team on the Saturday afternoon they were almost through travelling. They were just 30 minutes from the Lodge. As Jack said, “now we feel like this trip is really just beginning, we are in the mountains.”

The air will be cool, the scenery all around alluring. Vladimir is waiting along with the hotel staff to welcome Jack and Scott to their home in the mountains. They will be staying in one place for a few nights now and it is time to start hiking and training for their ascent of Elbrus. Stay tuned.
