their highest point so far on the trip

It’s about 4:00 in the afternoon on August 8th. I am calling you from the station at the base of the cable cars, which lead us high onto the slopes of Elbrus.

We were up there today, and what a beautiful day it was. The sky was absolutely clear throughout the early morning on into the afternoon. The twin summits of Elbrus rose above us. I have to say it looks very inviting. I kept on telling Kate, Michael and John it is a lot further up there than it looks. (transmission interrupted) as we played around the glacier, the mountain seemed very friendly and appealing.

At the end of the day we rode the chair lift down from the barrels to the cable cars and then to the valley below and our hotel

the barrels to the cable cars and then to the valley

below and our hotel

We visited the barrels for the first time today. Tomorrow we will move up into the barrels and stay there for the duration of our summit attempt, as many nights as it takes. Today’s acclimatization and familiarization was about getting a feel for what this upper portion of Elbrus will be like. The sunny day attracted many tourists, Russians out for a holiday in the mountains. Some were dressed in city clothes and walking about in city shoes at the base of the glacier. We were up there with our big heavy packs, our ice axes, crampons etc. and we took a short walk onto the glacier, knowing that we were looking at an area that will be our new home in the coming days as we attempt to climber higher and higher on Elbrus.

At the end of the day we rode a chairlift down, then the two cable cars to take us back to the valley. We are going to be enjoying our last night with a sauna and buffet dinner before we climb Elbrus. Back down in the forest in our beautiful hotel.

Michael who lives in Aspen. Colorado half of the year is veryfamiliar with ski lifts, but he was not so sure about riding the Russian single chair DOWN, Near the bottom he was loving it however. Kate loves the barrels
