June 22, 2008 – On Pequeño Alpamayo Summit!

Pequeño Alpamayo Ridge

Pequeño Alpamayo Ridge

It’s still Ayamara New Years June 22nd, now I’m calling you from top of Pequeño Alpamayo. It’s 2:00 in the afternoon and the sky is still perfectly clear, no wind, warm and it has been an amazing climbing day. Now we are at 17,900 feet. Back on the top of Tarija, Karen Kilian and Rob Dunn decided that summit was what they wanted for the day. Karen had already climbed Pequeño Alpamayo with Berg Adventures a few years ago here in Bolivia. Karen and Rob, along with our BAI guide Apollo, headed down from the top of Tarija to join Roy, Keith and Simon and the rest of the crew back at base camp.

The rest of us descended a steep rock section off of Tarija, then did a traverse on the snow and reached that spectacular ridge that reaches the top of Pequeño Alpamayo. The crew is up here now taking their photos. Stacy, Yael, Adam, Bonnie, Paul and Armando are here with Leila and I. We also have our other guides with us; Osvaldo, Juancho and Marko. We can still look out to the west at Sajama, which will be what we climb next week. For now, we have to go slowly on our descent back down the traverse; up the rock section; over the top of Tarija and down the glacier to meet the others at base camp.

We will give you another report once we get back to base camp this evening.

June 23rd – Extra report: We just received a report at BAI headquarters in Canmore that the team is safely back at base camp and on their way back to La Paz where they will be sending us another update and photos.
