Bolivia Expedition Dispatch

June 21, 2008 – Safely down at Condoriri Base Camp

Stacey and Yael

It’s a Saturday morning June 21st; we are in Bolivia during solstice. There is a warm sun hitting the meadow here at Condoriri base camp. We returned yesterday from our summit of Cerro Austria at about 5:00 we got back into base. This morning Simon and his staff are servicing fresh baked empanadas and the team is having coffee and leisurely breakfast and getting ready for our day.

Everyone is getting to know each other better, and long time friends Stacy and Yael are inseparable. Stacey who lives in England and Yael in New York are like sisters. They have done a few trips with Berg Adventures and before each climbing trip, they communicate with the ‘E.R.” code- “Exercise Report” to keep each other motivated and on track.

Paul and Osvaldo took off walking at 5am this morning for an ascent up to the skyline ridge on the glacier above here so Paul could get some photos of Pequeño Alpamayo.

Paul has been here before, he is quite the climber. As a matter of fact when we did our class a couple of days ago, when I was telling everyone how I rig my ice axe leash for climbing, Paul proudly showed the ice axe leash he had rigged when he and I were together on Everest in 1993. Since that time Paul, using that very rig, has climbed all of the seven summits, a total of three 8,000 meter peaks, including more mountaineering accomplishments in scattered spots around the world than I can count, many with Berg Adventures, on his own and with others. Paul is a great companion in the mountains, he wanted to go off this morning for a nostalgic view of a peak he has already climbed and we will have the privilege of Paul climbing with us tomorrow when we go back to Pequeño Alpamayo.

The rest of us are relaxing here, but we have Juancho and two other BAI guides to come up here and meet us in just a minute for glacier practice on Saturday before our Sunday ascent on June 22 of Pequeño Alpamayo. Stay tuned and we will let you know how that goes!
