November 12, 2006 High Camp on Lobuche

Listen to Audio of John's Call (.wav)

Hi, it’s John calling from Lobuche high camp this afternoon.  We are at about 17,030 feet (5165m).  We arrived at high camp just after 2:00pm this afternoon.  Our Sherpa team left earlier to ready camp for our arrival.  When we made it to high camp our tents were pitched and tea was ready which is always a pleasure.

Peter and Karen have acclimatized well over the past days and the weather seems to be in our favor.  From where I stand now I get a great profile of Ama Dablam and a terrific view of Nupste and I can just about see Lhotse as well from where I sit.  This is a beautiful camp and is located next to a hidden lake but despite the beauty we won’t be spending much time here.

After dinner we will climb into our sleeping bags for some quality hours.  We are planning to wake up at about 3:00am, have a little bit of breakfast and leave camp by 4:00am.  So wish us luck tomorrow for our summit bid.
