Barry Bishop maps Mingbo Valley with a Wild theodolite
The team constructed a camp at 19,000 feet that some members thought resembled the London Subway system. They lived in it for five wintry months.
The expedition’s camp was a ground-breaking effort to sustain human activity
at an extreme altitude. “Each day at such heights, a man dies a little as
progressive deterioration and weight loss sets in,” Bishop wrote.
