August 30, 2007 – Sliding and Skiing down the Fan Mountains

We found a beautiful spot to stop and photograph the area we had come from

A day and a half since I last called you from Chimtarga pass, it’s probably been the best of the entire trek. Seems like a long time ago actually, we’ve come a long ways. The adventures have been continuous along the way and this group has gotten themselves into great shape and they’ve been up for every challenge and every opportunity along the trail.

Right after I talked to you yesterday, we began descending off the pass and we descended hundreds and hundreds of feet by skiing or sliding along in the moving scree of small loose rocks that went steeply down the slope. We lost a lot of elevation along that way and later we found a beautiful spot to stop and photograph the area we had come from, the high pass above us, in a golden light of the early evening.

Now about this time, we realize we still have a long ways to go including a trek through a broken glacial moraine that was quite unsure ground but our group stayed together. Of course the porters still had some heavy, heavy loads, and we just took our time and worked our way through the rebel fields towards the lake below.
