At the carpet showroom in Kathmandu

Well today on the 1st of May we’ve had fantastic luck.  We all met in the lobby of the Yak and Yeti at 5:30am this morning, loaded into a bus and drove out to the airport.  By 6:20am we were through security and soon after that we were in the air and believe it or not at 7:15am we landed on that spectacular short runway in Lukla, 9,200 feet (2800m) above sea level.  The air was clear, we were all excited of course and feeling really lucky to be underway in such a short and spectacular fashion.

As you probably heard, yesterday’s city tour in Kathmandu was fascinating especially after we saw the major monasteries and stupas and some of the sites of Kathmandu.  We met our friend at the Hyatt hotel for lunch and then went to see a really fascinating carpet showroom.  Gary actually went over to visit the factory and probably the rest of us will do the same when we return to Kathmandu.

But today it’s all about high mountains.  All the guys were asking me when we got off what’s the name of that peak and what’s that big one, but I had to tell them that what you see from here in Lukla is actually just the small stuff.  In most cases they don’t even have names.

We are going to begin trekking now.  We are going to walk down along the Dudh Kosi river and spend the night a very relaxing, little lodge right by the rushing waters edge.  We are happy to be underway and the entire crew, Ben, Cam, Brad, David, Jay, Mike, Dan and Gary are looking great, healthy, happy and excited.  We are going to keep reporting to you every day along the trail.
