March 12, 13 – Climb for A Cure says goodbye to Africa

Celebrating the end of our journeyOn the evening of the 12th our Tarangire Staff surprised us with cake shaped like Kilimanjaro. We had a great night, good meal and of course the wonderful cake. Earlier that day we met our goal and saw the ‘big five’, elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, lion and leopard. Doug spotted the leopard just after 6:00 pm as our safari was coming to an end for the day.

On the morning of the 13th, Adam, Doug, Angie, John and myself went out for a final dawn game drive, leaving the Tarangire lodge at 6:00am. By afternoon the entire group returned to Arusha. Nicholaus met them at the hotel to say goodbye and Adam and Haruna drove the group to Kilimanjaro International Airport for their return flights to Canada.

Laurie wonders if this elephant is close enough? The adventures of Safari left this group satisfied and tired, as the Kilimanjaro climb had done. It was a rich and memorable two weeks in Tanzania, one that will live in the memories of these climbers for years to come. The challenges were greater than we could have imagined. At the same time each team member, and all of the people of Tanzania who supported us, was greater than we could have imagined. The strength of this team, the member's compassion, focus, commitment and humor was as impressive as the gleaming summit of Kibo itself. We hope we will inspire others to continue with us as we to strive to support the victims of ALS and their families in Canada, and to promote research to find a cure for this terrible disease.
