October 27, 2007 – Team Members Begin to Arrive in Kathmandu

This is Leila Silveira reporting from Kathmandu on October 27. Roger Brookins, John Freeman and I arrived today in Kathmandu on the Thai Airlines flight from Kathmandu.

We’d all met in Los Angeles and then we took the 17 ½ hour direct flight to Bangkok.  We each had personal TV monitors with 30 movies to choose from on the flight across the Pacific.  Once we got to Bangkok, we only had to wait three hours before we were on our way to Kathmandu!

We arrived in a beautiful sunny day, clear skies and were happy to see our old friends, Ang Temba, Wongchu, Min Bahadur and Shittal.  As you can see from the photo, Roger and I look pretty good for two people who just spent 24 hours on airplanes.  I guess that's partly due to the excitement of being back in Nepal. This is Roger's second trip and it is my tenth. It is always great to return to Nepal.

We drove to our hotel, the famous Yak and Yeti, and we were pleased to get our rooms quickly, then take showers, rest and unpack.   The hotel had hung a large welcome sign for the BAI team members who will be arriving in the next days.

Roger had more work to do this afternoon. Tomorrow he is flying to Lukla with his favorite Berg Adventures Sherpa guide, Pemba.   Roger and Pemba are going ahead of the team, and they will wait for us in Lukla taking advantage of the time to do extra acclimatization and hiking.

We are just getting underway!  Team members for the Everest Base Camp trek, Island Peak and Ama Dablam are all on the way to join us now.  Stay tuned daily throughout this season to view our reports.
