May 3, 2007 Yak Sizzler in Namche
...we enjoyed a bit of coffee and tea together and before breakfast we took off for a short walk from our lodge up to the National Park headquarters. Sure enough in the hazy, early morning sky looking to the east we saw Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nupste and of course that stunning, steep figure of a mountain right in front of us, Ama Dablam. We’ll see much more of these peaks as we go further up the Khumbu, but there is nothing like that first look when you know you are finally in the region of Mount Everest and looking at the world’s greatest mountains. Later today we walked down into Namche, of course, saw a lot of old friends, a lot of news from Everest Base Camp. Several people have come down on their way out because of sickness. Others were on their way up to visit as we are. There are Internet cafes here so a lot of people check in on news around the world and check in with friends and family. And of course this place is where you go to eat. I heard reports of excellent pizza at one place, someone else was talking about the yak sizzler, that’s yak meat, potatoes, vegetables put in a hot grill and brought out sizzling to the table. It was a real hit for the guys who had yak sizzler. I also heard that the black forest cake at one bakery was especially good. We met back up at our lodge this afternoon for tea, shared our stories of the day and visited with more friends we met that have come down from Everest Base Camp, and... [lost transmission]
