June 22 – Summit Attempt

Autio not received for today's dispatch

Huayna Potosi from high campDispatch for June 22 Bolivia Woke at 2 AM and left high camp on Huanya Potosi shortly after 3 AM .We ascended glacier in the dark for about 3 hours looking at the lights of La Paz in the distance, about fifty miles away. As we reached the base of a steep section at about 18500 feet it became apparent that we were just moving a bit slow to reach the summit in time. This was probably due to quite a poor sleep and many days trekking and climbing at altitude in the past two weeks. In any case it was a good descision to turn around and we did get to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises ever with alpenglow lighting up the peak and clear views to the Yungas sub tropical zone 15000 feet below. We descended to high camp and then to base camp where we met our transport back to La Paz. Now showered we are clean and happy and looking forward to some fine dining near the hotel. Off to the ancient site of Tiahaunaco tomorrow.
