Ojos del Salado as seen from Laguna Verde

Well, it’s New Year’s Eve and if you are wondering what the Berg Adventures Ojos team is up to, we’ve moved our camp from Santa Rosa Lake at approximately 12,500 ft (3810m) to Laguna Verde Lake at 14,500 ft (4420m).

Bob sees Ojos for the first timeWe are camping in the high desert, and I didn’t describe this before but you always have to deal with the winds that come up in the afternoon.  This morning at Santa Rosa Lake we had calm skies, no wind and we packed up our camp and loaded up Samu, our trusty Toyota land cruiser 4-wheel drive and we had another vehicle drive out from Copiapo to assist us with our move.

We loaded up our vehicles and drove for a couple of hours across the high desert over one high pass and we got our first view of Ojos del Salado which of course was exciting to us and as Bob says ‘It gets the heart pumping to see that high desert peak off in the distance that we intend to climb’.

And then a bit further on our drive we came around the corner and it takes your breath away when you see the brilliant, bright turquoise color of Laguna Verde Lake where we will be living for at least the next 4 days as we acclimatize and prepare to climb higher up on Ojos del Salado.

But for now we are busy unpacking, setting up our tents and Charlie is making lunch.  For New Year’s Eve 2006 beginning tomorrow morning we are in one of the most beautiful spots in the world.  So this team is happy and our acclimatization is going well.
