Nikki shows off her BAI Aconcagua 2007 hat in Mendoza

Today is the 17th of January.  It’s time to leave Mendoza where we had a relaxing and very enjoyable two nights.  We’ll be driving out to Punta del Inca along the highway and in the afternoon we will be walking to the Confluencia camp at 3300m (11,830ft) inside the provincial park that contains Aconcagua.  Here in Argentina, Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America, the highest peak in all of the western hemisphere in fact.  It’s almost 7000m just under 23,000ft.  It’s going to be a big challenge for this group but I think they are up for it.

At the park service office for Aconcagua where we get our permits to climbYesterday in Mendoza was very enjoyable.  Martin, Erin, Opus, Jeff, Danny and Carol who are still with us of course, Klaus and Claire all went out to my and Leila’s favorite family winery here in the Mendoza area.  When they got back Martin who doesn’t even drink wine was talking about what a great seven course meal was served by this family at the winery we enjoy visiting.

It wasn’t quite a relaxing day for Leila, Oswaldo, Juancho and I.  We spent our morning at the Wal-Mart super center preparing more supplies and food for the Aconcagua expedition.  Meanwhile Dafna did her favorite thing in the world to do which is walk.  She walked many miles around Mendoza and enjoyed the beautiful plazas, parks and walkways of Mendoza.

Outside the Tourism Center where the park office is located

Nikki, Steve and Jerri took the morning to relax and do a little shopping.  As I said we found Mendoza extremely enjoyable but now it’s time to go back and climb another mountain.  We will be reporting to you daily from our climb on Aconcagua which for us will go pretty fast because we are confident we are well acclimatized.
