NSNT Expedition for the Earth Trekking in Iceland Dispatch

September 10, 2016 – The Highland Region of Landamannahellir

A very different day today. Yesterday we walked about 10 km and it was all about water, very clean fresh water coming from springs in every direction, beautiful streams, very green.

Today is different, a night spent at our first local hut; this one runs by local farmers, sheep herders. It was a sod covered hut, very nice, very modern inside, it seemed like it would a very cozy hut during the winter in Iceland.

We began our walk of 22 km across lava rock and sand. The walk is fascinating in terms of geology, quite smooth under foot and the lava sand is solid. The trails we walked so far are virtually pristine and very rarely visited, you see no ugly scars from a lot of foot traffic or human travel, certainly no wheel vehicles go on these trails.

Our Nova Scotia Nature Trust team is ready to go.
