Recapping Our Favorite Moments of 2014

Friday, December 19th, 2014

As yet another amazing year of adventures comes to and end we are looking back at some of our favorite moments of 2014. Enjoy these recaps of our teams’ success!

Paul Kitney started 2014 off with a climb of the second highest peak in South America: Ojos del Salado. He, Osvaldo and the BAI Bolivia climbing guides were our first team to reach a summit this year.

In February we had two very memorable climbs of Kilimanjaro:

First Danny and Hendrik, two friends from the United States traversed to the top of this seven summit mountain via the Umbwe Northern Circuit route. Crossing some of the more remote and quite trails they reached the summit just as a snow storm was about to hit. They made it down to their lower camp just in time with memories to last a lifetime.

While Danny and Hendrik were making it down Bharath Samrat and his team of BAI guides and staff and journalist Shelia Nykwist were trekking to the summit as the wind and snow were picking up. After a night of sleeping with strong winds and freezing temperatures the team made it down to celebrate the achievement of Bharath’s inspirational dream, reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro at 19,340ft/5,895m.

In March BAI embarked on a unique expedition to one of the most remote summits that we climb: Carstensz Pyramid in the jungles of Papua, Indonesia. Our team took on the ultimate challenge of trekking, exploring and climbing their way to the top at 16,024ft/4,884m.

This year during our Bolivia Mountain School expedition we were so happy to be a part of Chris Von Gartzen’s Climb for Paws. This fundraising climb was a mountaineering expedition to raise awareness for the plight of street dogs around the world. Chris and Micheline Thibodeau spent a week brushing up on their mountaineering skills and summiting Pequeneo Alpamayo, the 17,618ft/5,370m glaciated peak.

In August we returned to Africa to enjoy the spirit and camaraderie that BAI Kilimanjaro climbs are famous for. This time the team experienced sleeping at high camp in the light of the Supermoon. Dancing, singing, incredible views and awesome team spirit were just some of the highlights of this fun-filled expedition.

Dave Cohn certainly had a year of achieving goals. After trekking through the Khumbu in May he returned to BAI with another impressive expedition in mind. He travelled to Bolivia in August to first immerse himself in the rich Bolivian culture before moving onto the Cordillera Real to reach the summit of Pequeno Alpamayo. His summit day is one we will never forget!

We were delighted to begin our busy fall season in Nepal off with father daughter comic duo Rich and Bonnie Alessio, a.k.a., the Grizzled Mountain Man and his trust sidekick the Sweaty Mess. This fun filled team trekked the Khumbu offering safety tips and entertaining explanations of the rugged mountain terrain as they made their way to Everest Base Camp.

A Guinness World Record was set and great adventure was had by all when BAI ran the Far Cry 4 “Quest for Everest”. With Dave Morton and Tom Grimshaw along to do the filming and Wally and Deirdre on hand along with Temba and the Sherpa staff, we ran what was most definitely the most unique trip on the BAI 2014 calendar. Will Cruz was the man of the hour when he set the record.

A Recap on our Fall Season in Nepal

Thursday, November 27th, 2014

We are wrapping up yet another successful expedition season in Nepal . Berg Adventures is so proud of all climbers and trekkers who took on challenges and achieved their impressive goals!

We began this fall season with our comic book duo “the Grizzled Mountain Man and his trusty sidekick the Sweaty Mess”. This fun father daughter team, Rich and Bonnie Alessio, trekked through the Khumbu and kept us smiling as they called each day with updates. Their dispatches or “episodes” were filled with beautiful photos, informative explanations and stories of their three week adventure. After their Berg Adventures trip ended Bonnie went on to Bhutan to take part in a biking adventure. We can’t wait for the next book. As the duo would say; “Till next time”!

Our next Nepal expedition was the Quest for Everest trek with Ubisoft. Ubisoft, the creator of the Far Cry videogames, held a contest for one lucky gamer to trek to Everest base camp and play the 4th installment of the game along the trails. It was an awesome experience for the entire team and full of unique moments. Some of the trip highlights included Will and the Sherpa team playing Far Cry 4, Wally and Deirdre meeting the comic book duo Rich and Bonnie on the trails, spending three nights camping at Everest base camp and our first time in the jungles of Chitwan. After returning home from the trek the team was so happy to find out that after a 7-hour day on top of Kala Pathar the team had helped Ubisoft secure the Guinness World Record for the Highest Altitude Console Gaming Session.

The last group to meet in Nepal was our Ultimate Nepal Adventure Team. The group had quite the agenda. With three expeditions planned they all met in Kathmandu ready to take on their goals. For Scott and Barbara Martyn it was to reach Everest base camp and stand in the shadows of the world’s tallest mountain. They trekked with their team through the Sherpa villages and enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery the Himalaya have to offer.

For Ken Poskitt it was to continue on from Everest base camp into the High Passes of Everest. After departing from the group in Pheriche he and his guides continued on to the more remote passes of the Khumbu valley. They trekked three impressive passes; the Cho (La 15,748ft/4,800m), Gokyo Ri (17,576ft/5,357m) and Renjo La (16306ft/4,970m) while staying in some beautiful lodges and homes of our Sherpa friends.

Our last group set their goals with an incredible feat; reaching 20,305ft/6,190m on the summit of Island Peak. The group enjoyed their time at Island Peak base camp and high camp as they acclimatized, practiced their mountaineering skills, and prepared their gear for the climb. After waking in the early morning for an alpine start Bob, Frank and Travis began their accent of this glaciated peak. After reaching the summit the team, with their climbing guides Sandkup Sherpa and Jatha Rai, made it back down to base camp at noon where nice hot meals and Ang Temba Sherpa were waiting to congratulate the team!

This year has been a challenging one for the people of the Khumbu Valley, but their love for their homeland and happiness to share it with people from around the world will always remain. The team experienced such a warm welcome from the people of the Khumbu. They met many of our Sherpa friends who were happy to bring them into their homes and show them what life is like in the valley. When the team arrived at Everest Base Camp they were invited for lunch at the SPCC Icefall doctor’s tents, where they spent some time with the incredible people who work so hard on expeditions every year.

Lodges versus Camping in Nepal

Saturday, February 15th, 2014

We are frequently asked why we choose to stay in lodges instead of tents on the Everest Base Camp Trek. Some companies argue that camping offers more freedom and comfort. We maintain that this is absolutely not true in the Khumbu Region of Nepal and here is why.

1. Tea Lodges are an important part of the cultural traditions of Buddhist traders and pilgrims who have traveled between Nepal and Tibet for centuries. Lodge design today follows old traditions and reminds visitors of the rich history and culture of the region. Nearly all Sherpa lodges are constructed in a similar fashion following these long-standing tradition. The main room of the lodge is a large rectangular shape surrounded by windows with window seats and tables on three sides. In the middle of the room is a wood stove to keep the area warm. Traditionally, travelers and pilgrims slept on the window benches in these common rooms. Today, travelers stay in bedrooms located elsewhere in the main lodge or more commonly in adjacent buildings and the main room is used as the space for dining, socializing and relaxing.

2. A selling point companies use to promote tent treks is that the food catered to the group and the team has their own cook. Berg Adventures treats meals the same way any tenting trek does which means we do not buy our meals from our lodges. We carry all of our own dishes, utensils and cookware as well as all of our own food. We also bring our own cook and support staff who will expertly prepare three meals plus a large afternoon snack every day. By bringing our own staff and supplies we can offer a higher level of service and can control the food safety and hygiene of the meals we prepare. Plus, we provide a greater level of variety offering a mix of local dishes and comfort foods from home. Think of it this way, when you trek with us, you get the benefit of having expedition quality meals and you get to stay in lodges!

What a treat! Climbers enjoy a fresh home-made dinner from Yangzing and Jeyta’s famous apple pie for dessert after an ascent of Island peak.

3. Relaxing in the warmth of the lodge dining room is a wonderful way to end a long day of trekking. While bedrooms are rarely heated in the Khumbu, the dining rooms are. These dining rooms are a great hub of activity where you get to mingle with climbers, other trekkers and locals too. When you camp, you can end up feeling secluded and really miss out on the camaraderie of traveling in Nepal.

4. Wally Berg has been traveling to Nepal annually (often bi-annually) for over 25 years. During that time, he has developed close friendships with many lodge owners and other locals. This means you will be treated like family when you stay at or eat lunch in our carefully selected lodges. You’re not just part of any regular trekking team, your part of the Berg Adventures Team!

After a full month of the ultimate Nepal adventure, with a stop in Tibet, the Sellers family expedition has come to an end. The Sellers began their expedition with a visit to the Khumbu, where they experienced the slow-paced, easy-going culture of the Sherpa’s as they trekked to Everest Base camp. After their visit to EBC, Scot and his Sherpa team successful made it to the top of Island Peak. Next, after three exciting weeks in the Khumbu the Sellers family travelled to the ancient and unscathed region of Mustang where they explored the famous “Sky Caves of Nepal” and the walled city of Lo Manthang. Climb Kilimanjaro by the Light of the Supermoon

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

Celestial Phenomenon to Look for in 2014

On August 10, 2014 the full moon will be closer to Earth than usual causing a phenomenon known as a “Supermoon”. This event occurs approximately every 14 full-moon cycles and results in the moon appearing larger and brighter than normal. Climbers on the August 2014 Kilimanjaro expedition will get to experience the supermoon from the comfort of our camp high on the mountain. The dramatic moon will rise shortly after 6pm just as the sun is setting over the shoulder of Kilimanjaro.

But the magnificence in the sky doesn’t end there. The climb also falls during the Perseids Meteor Shower which occurs from July 17 to August 24 peaking on the night of August 12 and early morning of August 13. This shower produces about 60 meteors per hour at its peak and is famous for being particularly bright. Don’t miss it! Join us on Kilimanjaro August 2 – 15, 2014.

Other Noteworthy Celestial Events of 2014 and Where to See Them

January 1-5: Quadrantids Meteor Shower – This meteor shower peaks at up to 40 meteors per hour and this year it will be particularly bright thanks to an early setting of a small crescent moon. Watch the celestial show at its peak on January 2 from the comfort of your safari lodge in Tarangire National Park.

April 19 – May 28: Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower – Prepare to be awed by one of the more active meteor showers of the year capable of exhibiting up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. This show is most pronounced in Southern Hemisphere, but those in the Northern Hemisphere will still be able to enjoy the show. When the show reaches its peak on May 5, the moon will be in its first quarter and will set early in the evening in Nepal. Everest Base Camp trekkers will be in the remote Khumbu Valley where the sky is dark and viewing is ideal.

December 7-17: Geminids Meteor Shower – Many consider this to be the “king” of meteor showers producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak. The waning moon will potentially block some meteors from view this year, but the Geminids are so bright and numerous that it will still be a spectacular show. The meteor action reaches its peak on December 13 where you can view it from the comfort of your safari lodge in the Ngorongoro Crater. No light pollution here!

Travel Brings Family Together – Plan a Family Trip with Berg Adventures

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Nothing brings people together like shared experiences. Think outside the box and plan your next family reunion abroad for an epic experience you will never forget! Many of our adventure destinations are great for families, but we have a few that are particularly suitable for groups with a range in physical fitness levels, stamina, outdoor prowess and age.

Tanzania

Tanzania is a perfect destination for families. Those members looking for a physical challenge can climb Kilimanjaro and after the climb everyone can join together for an exciting wildlife safari through the Serengeti. Those wishing to forego the climb can simply arrive in Tanzania later or we can help them arrange alternate activities. Zanzibar is a great place for those family members who prefer beach to mountain and a cultural tour of the Kilimanjaro region is perfect for the more adventurous.

Patagonia

Patagonia is the region Chile and Argentina that makes up the southern tip of South America. This region offers some of the world’s finest trekking opportunities with a variety of options in intensity. On the Torres del Paine trek, we stay in comfortable mountain lodges instead of tents which will satisfy the family members who are not keen on camping. Furthermore, each day there are easy and extended hiking options so everyone gets the level of physical activity that they desire. Some days we even offer the option to travel by boat instead of by foot!

Turkey

Berg Adventures Turkey itinerary is another that is well-suited to families. Our first two destinations of Istanbul and Cappadoccia are accessible to everyone. We will tour these two beautiful places to soak in the culture and the scenery. We will do some day hikes in the Cappadocia region, but there are always other alternatives such as a hot air balloon ride or a spa day. Finally we travel to Mount Ararat to climb Turkey’s highest peak. Not interested in the climb? The Turkish Riviera is a great place to relax while other family members sweat it out on the mountain!

Nepal

Nepal is a fantastic family destination for those families keen on trekking. What makes trekking in Nepal different from climbing Kilimanjaro or trekking in Patagonia is that you are actually trekking from village to village so you will meet local families, visit schools, shop at a local market and even receive a blessing from a local monk. If you are concerned about the hiking abilities of all of your family members, we offer modified itineraries with shortened days and more down time. We crafted our Christmas Trek in Nepal with families in mind and have designed the trip to work with school schedules. December is a great time to visit Nepal because it is the sunniest and driest month in the Everest region!

A Note about Kids and Altitude

We are frequently asked about children at altitude and from our experience children are not affected any differently than adults. If anything children and young adults do better at altitude! On both Kilimanjaro and at Everest Base Camp we have had kids as young as 11 and adults as old as 75+ complete the climb/trek. If you’re not interested in an altitude climb, Patagonia is a good option for you as the highest point on the trek is only at about 3,000ft/915m.

How We Get Things Delivered to Us at Everest Base Camp

Monday, May 13th, 2013

A team that has moved into Everest Base Camp for 6 – 8 weeks needs a constant supply of goods. We burn fuel, eat food and use up supplies. We also generate rubbish and solid human waste – all of which is removed from Base Camp under the supervision of the S.P.C.C. – the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Commission. In the Everest Region, no roads – just foot paths. So with no wheeled transport, we rely upon other forms of transportation to get our goods.

PORTERS

Porters are an important part of our supply chain and waste removal system. In the old days we had “Sherpa Mail Runners” who carried letters and dispatch messages by foot to and from Base Camp. These days we tend to rely more on the internet to communicate, but it is still possible to get items delivered from Kathmandu by Sherpa Runner in less than three days. The items are flown from Kathmandu to Lukla where they are picked up by a “runner” and carried to us.

YAKS

Instead of using runners, we use yaks when possible. Yaks are constantly moving in and out of Base Camp. Long an important member of the Berg Adventures team in Nepal is Nim Phuti who has been delivering supplies to us at Base Camp for well over a decade. Often when we trek in Nepal, Nim Phuti accompanies us with her yaks. If you have ever been on a Berg Adventures trip in Nepal, you will most certainly recall Nim Phuti and her beautiful smile. She is an important member of our Everest Expeditions and she plays a very significant role in allowing us to maintain our high level of comfort at camp.

HELICOPTERS

We have helicopters at Base Camp every day – even on our bad weather days. They are flying for all kinds of reasons, but it is not impossible to get a much needed item of communications equipment or medical supplies on one of the flights. We have two separate landing zones at Base Camp now, one in the lower sections of Base Camp and one high, right next to the icefall.
